Chapter 17

TF13 approached the Ming system. Rear Admiral Pang felt some relief, mixed with a bit of trepidation. They had rendezvoused with the destroyers as arranged. She had been relieved to find there had been no casualties.

Captain Randall, aboard Everest, was shaken up by some of the hits the destroyer had taken earlier in the fight. Thankfully, there was no severe damage to the ship. The shields had held up almost as well as the engineers at the Albion yards had said they would.

Pang shivered. The analysis done by the Fleet showed that the old-style shields would have been almost completely ineffective against the Globur electron beams. Once the Globurs were in beam range, the older ships never stood a chance.

She glanced over the flag bridge as the plot counted down to transition to normal space. The blankness of quantum space filled the external holodisplays. Dixmude was alone in her own little universe, completely cut off from everything until they transitioned near the Ming system.

Captain Jones had transferred over to Dixmude at the rendezvous. She was not surprised to see him on the flag bridge as they approached transition. He didn’t want to get in the way on the command bridge below. He saw her and gave a nod. He had already prepared his after-action report, and they had discussed it several times. Jones was keen to get back in the fight and was hoping to catch a transport back to the Albion yards as soon as possible.

Jones would likely be ordered back to Fleet Headquarters immediately, maybe even before he could get the Armet augmentation. Pang was looking forward to linking with the Fleet relay so she could get mission updates. She also wanted answers about why every crewmember had received a neural shock when their ships were hit. We better fix that ASAP, or we’ll be sitting ducks in a fight.

Some of the engineering staff thought it was a software problem, but the technicians dedicated to maintaining and repairing their armor augmentation were not in agreement. Since the system was supposed to be run by an AI and there really wasn’t any software to speak of. She glanced down at her hand with its telltale blue tinge. This whole armor thing still makes me uncomfortable. Now it seems to have glitches, too.

Some of Rear Admiral Pang’s trepidation came from their destination. Ming was a principality, and so not technically part of the empire. It was a single system ruled by an emperor—an absolute ruler. Although they had technically joined the empire, they retained self-government.

Most principalities were single systems, but a few had two systems, and one even had three. They joined the empire primarily for trade opportunities. They had no official standing in the Imperial Senate, but they could petition the president of the empire to resolve issues or disputes.

The Ming system, or Ming principality, was home to a single inhabited planet and three other planets. The system also included a vast asteroid belt that held a lot of mineral wealth.
